Un viaggio nel cuore del marchio Axevo, per scoprire il punto di contatto tra la qualità della lavorazione artigianale, l’innovazione continua e l ’esperienza derivata dalle corse.

Siamo stati dove nascono i telai Axevo, tra fumi di saldatura e carbonio, tra forcelle e manubri, fino a seguire il team Avion Axevo e il suo capitano Mirko Celestino durante una giornata di gara.

L’ incontro era improntato su tutto il sistema quindi sono state ripresentate anche la C300, la 1Dx e le lenti cine di cui sono per ora disponibili solamente gli zoom.

Arrivo a Cinecittà alle 10:00. Canon ha fatto le cose in grande: studio 1 di Cinecittà con piccolo rinfresco di benvenuto e check-in. Bevo due caffè, sono nervoso. La C300 l’ ho già provata e purtroppo ha deluso le mie aspettative quindi spero vivamente che la 5D mkIII nn faccia lo stesso.

Il tempo che tutti si siano accreditati e le porte si aprono. Il teatro di posa è grande, con una tenda che lo divide in due parti. La luce è poca e io, con la mia 5D mkII con 24-70 f2.8, già capisco che le foto che mi sono ripromesso di fare verranno malissimo. Prendo posto in prima fila.

La presentazione comincia con il corto di Vincent Laforet girato con la C300.  Già visto ma è bello vederlo su uno schermo grande. Mi piace molto il suo stile, ha quella composizione d’ immagine tipicamente fotografica che lo contraddistingue.

Finito il corto comincia la presentazione. Per mia fortuna iniziano dalla 5D mkIII. Non mi perderò in tecnicismi che potete tranquillamente trovare  qui.

Le modifiche più interessanti dal mio punto di vista sono: la possibilità di registrare in continuo fino a 29min e 59sec ,limite imposto per legge per non pagare ulteriori tasse di importazione, se nn fosse per questo la 5D mkIII potrebbe registrare limitatamente solo alle schede al suo interno senza perdere frame. Altro punto interessante è la nuova compressione  intra-frame (all-i). Purtroppo nn ho potuto registrare su una mia scheda un file dato che nn era permesso ma dovrebbe notevolmente aumentare la qualità del file soprattutto per chi di solito va a metterci le mani in post. Durante la presentazione sono stati sottolineati in particolare anche la riduzione del rumore  ad alti iso e il fatto che la macchina dovrebbe avere moirè, aliasing, skew e fringing  ridotti. Purtroppo nn ho potuto fare le prove per appurare la bontà di queste affermazioni quindi nn posso esprimermi.

Mi ha profondamente stupito il fatto che abbiano parlato principalmente della parte video della macchina quasi dimenticandosi di quella fotografica… Altra cosa che secondo me è da sottolineare è che nella “piramide” dei prodotti Canon, la 5D mk III si collocherà come seconda sia per prezzo che per prestazioni superata solo dalla 1Dx. La 5d mkII rimarrà in produzione quindi non dobbiamo pensare alla nuova arrivata come ad un evoluzione della mkII ma come un prodotto del tutto nuovo. Da quello che ho capito la casa nipponica ha deciso di cambiare il top di gamma trasformando 1D e 1Ds in 1Dx e 5D mkIII.

Finita la presentazione della mkIII è toccato alla 1Dx orami annunciata e presentata in tutti i sui dettagli da tempo. Presentazione interessante anche se abbastanza inutile. Avrei preferito poterla acquistare invece che sentirne nuovamente parlare. Nella seconda parte della presentazione è stato possibile provare i due nuovi corpi macchina. La 5D mkIII è bella da vedere e da impugnare ma è poco più di una fusione tra una mkII e una 7D. La sensazione di impugnare la 1Dx invece è fantastica, sono riusciti a creare una macchina, un feticcio, un oggetto che potrebbe essere venduto anche senza finalità tecnica. Ovviamente speriamo che sia all’altezza della sua estetica.Ergonomia, rumore, tasti e materiali insieme alle incredibili prestazioni ne giustificano il prezzo.

Dopo aver visto queste due anteprime è arrivato il momento della C300. Ero già stati ad una presentazione fatta ad ADCOM e li mi era stato permesso anche di registrare un  file su una CF da analizzare poi con calma. Più vedo questa camera, più ne sento parlare e meno mi convince. Sono troppi i compromessi. Durante la costruzione di questa  camera nn si è presa una singola scelta. E’ in tutto e per tutto un compromesso. Qual’ è il punto forte della C300? In cosa Canon è riuscita a dare quel valore aggiunto che l’ ha distinta tante volte?  Dal mio punto di vista quello che manca alla C300 è il carattere, con la C maiuscola.

La decisione di contenere i costi ha avuto effetti a cascata sulla realizzazione della C300. Rispetto alle mie necessità i punti deboli sono: il codec MPEG-2, il fatto che lavori ad 8 bit, l’ impossibilità di cambiare da attacco PL a attacco EF sullo stesso corpo, i massimi 25-30 fps  a 1080p e la massima definizione di 1080p. I pregi più lampanti sono invece la compattezza e l’ ottima costruzione del corpo (rispetto all’ F3 è come paragonare una Fiat ad una Ferrari), la praticità e reperibilità delle CF, il fatto che sia studiata per lavorare nativamente a 850iso, la buona gamma dinamica, il Canon Log che sembra essere uno strumento comodo ed efficace e per ultimo l’ ottimo lavoro di collaborazione svolto da Canon con le maggiori case di supporti che hanno sviluppato componenti ad hoc.

Detto questo le conclusioni risultano lampanti . La C300 è una buona camera che sicuramente avrà un suo mercato ma non nel mondo del cinema. E’ pratica, compatta, veloce e versatile ma non sono queste le caratteristiche che personalmente ricerco in una cinepresa. La C300 è una broadcast con qualcosa in più, è quel punto di raccordo tra i due mondi ma personalmente preferisco qualcosa di più dedicato.

It’s amazing how the strangest sounds end up on a mix , from lion roars , guns loading up  and cd drives spinning fast. I love when a video gives you a challenge and this video was quite a big one.

From the early moments of the project development we decided that all the soundtrack for the “tubular heads” video will be made from scratch in the studio. And so I did , with no production sound whatsoever I received 2:47s video with absolutely no sound.  We’ve being working Bike videos a lot lately for several brands including Vittoria and Geax They are always a challenge but at the end of the day I always receive that 30% of production sound that gives me a big hand at post. This time because we where using a Quad-bike on the “outside” location of the video all sound was simply unusable.

First things first:

From the start I always knew how the lab would sound like. I started by layering all the ambience and editing the fx tracks: hums, fans, machinery, alarms, chimes, steam etc…  After that I started  the foley process for the lab : footsteps, clothes, tire squeaks and all the movements  and actions for both the scientist and the team.

Bikes, bikes and more bikes.

Usually when I have to do bike videos I get my bike in the studio and use it for foley , so I get the sound of the chains and pedals. This time we had 4 bike on the video. So the usual approach wasn’t working.  I decided to try and record my bike while riding it (for a more organic feel). First I placed my shotgun mic in to the tire pump holder (it fitted perfectly)  and attached to my Zoom H4 recorder grab my helmet and went for a spin. Since the vibration of the road was passing on to the bike frame and consequently to the mic I obtained a really nice surface noise (contact of the tire with the ground).
I also wanted to layer a more open sound, so I attached a shock-mount to the frame (with tape) pointed the mic in to the gears and the back wheel and went for another ride. I rode fore about 2 hours in all the surfaces I found: asphalt, cement, grass, dirt and even a bike race track near the sea. I got all I needed.

Mix

For the mix I edited the recording to make 4 uniquely different “bike” tracks, prepared all the FX for the tracks  and layered them with the rest of the project. When the music from Andrea Alvino arrived everything was ready for the final mix and the print.

It was a very challenging project but also a lot of fun !  I always like when a project like this arrives to the studio, It gets me thinking of mad ways to record stuff.

The new video for Geax  is finally public. It took a lot of time and energy ,but we are satisfied with the results. We hope our efforts shine through the work.  Building the set was quite challenging, it measures 10mx13m, the construction work was quite complex.  The two designers, Marco Menegaldo e Mattia Federici did an extraordinary job. With a little bit of our help they were able to fit everything in a week.

While building the set, we started the casting with Giada Mazzoleni’s assistance. We managed to find our mad scientist perfectly embodied by Ireneo Gerolomino. Our stylist Michela Meni created the actor’s outfit and we where ready to shoot. We had everything we needed to start. After having built the scenery the pre-light was very simple.

The shooting lasted 3 days. During the first two days we filmed on the workshop set , the exit from the building and all the green screen.

After a  week  we started our third production day, we filmed on location in Brescia in an abandoned quarry in the countryside. We are used to filming cycling videos with motorcycles and steadycams , but this time we managed to get a quadbike that  helped us a lot on the rough terrain. Special thanks to Adalberto Roncalli, our intern and driver.

After we finished filming, Claudio mounted a rough cut for the customer to get an idea of how it would look. With their clearance we started the post production; meanwhile Andrea Alvino began preparing the soundtrack.

Finally, when we were almost at the end of the edit with the majority of the effects done, the whole project was sent to Dino Gervasoni (our sound designer) for the sound dubbing and mix.
Meanwhile I started the color correction but the fist version did not convince me so I had it redone  and here’s the result.

Looking at the final project is, for us, a great satisfaction. Although it is just a little video in which we put great passion and hard commitment. Our idea was to try to create something new and curios, never done in the mountain bike world before.

Another part of Vittoria Identity project has been completed. Today, to our great happiness, we met Francesco Moser, near Trento, in his beautiful estate nestled in the vineyards. We had a long chat about cycling. After, we were offered a good glass of Moscato. We also had the great fortune to see the bike in which he did the Hour Record on the 23 January 1984 in Mexico City and the bike of the Indoor Hour Record on the 21 May 1988 in Stuttgart (Germany).

Today we went to the Montichiari velodrome to shoot another part of the  Vittoria Identity Project. The pistard‘s received us while they were training.

Finally, our office is beginning to take shape.  The first works include  the offices and the studio. Electricians and plumbers are working and we hope to have it ready  at the end of January. We are sure that this place will improve our work.
